Carrier tape materials: PC and PET

1. From a conceptual perspective:

PC (Polycarbonate): A colorless, transparent, and aesthetically pleasing plastic. Because PC is non-toxic, odorless, has good UV protection and moisture-proof/aroma-preserving properties, and a wide temperature range (not brittle at -180℃ and can be used for extended periods at 130℃), it is an ideal food packaging material.

PET: A highly crystalline, colorless, transparent, and extremely tough material. Suzhou carrier tapes have a glass-like appearance, are odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, flammable, and burn with a yellow flame with a blue edge. They have good airtightness.

2. From the perspective of characteristics and uses:

PC: Has excellent impact resistance and is easy to mold. It can be made into bottles, cans, and various shapes of containers for packaging beverages, wines, milk, and other fluids. A major disadvantage of PC carrier tapes is stress cracking. In addition to selecting high-purity raw materials and strictly controlling various processing conditions, the production process utilizes resin modification with low internal stress, such as melt blending with small amounts of polyolefins, nylon, and polyester, which significantly improves stress cracking resistance and water resistance.

PET: It has a low coefficient of thermal expansion and a low molding shrinkage rate of only 0.2%, which is one-tenth that of polyolefins and smaller than PVC and nylon, resulting in dimensional stability of the finished product. Kunshan carrier belts exhibit excellent mechanical strength, with an expansion degree similar to aluminum. Its film strength is 9 times that of polyethylene, 3 times that of polycarbonate and nylon, and its impact strength is 3-5 times that of ordinary films. Furthermore, its films possess moisture-proof and aroma-retaining properties. While polyester has the above advantages, its films are expensive, difficult to heat-seal, and prone to static electricity, so it is rarely used alone. It is mostly used in combination with resins with better heat-sealing properties to form composite films.

Therefore, PET bottles produced using the biaxial stretch blow molding method can fully utilize the characteristics of PET, namely good transparency, high surface gloss, and a glassy appearance. Kunshan carrier belts are a suitable alternative to glass bottles.
